Why we don’t use Senior horse feeds.

I do not feed senior horse feeds because of all the unhealthy ingredients..many which can irritate the gut and are pro-inflammatory. Here are ingredients off feed tags. Peanuts, wheat, soy, corn, molasses- not healthy. They also may contain artificial preservatives, colors and flavors.

I feed the 32 year old stallion 2# of alfalfa pellets and 12# of steamed timothy pellets (all soaked). No hay, he has few teeth. I give him 1-2 oz a day of Purina Free Balance granules, an ounce of loose white salt, a cup of Coolstance, one tsp. of turmeric and a pinch of black pepper, to potentiate the turmeric which is anti-inflammatory. He has a salt block. That’s it and he is galloping around. He was on senior feed in foster before he came here in Jan. 2012 and arrived gassy.. foster said he was always gassy for his 6 months after rescue. He’s fine after getting off the senior feed. He had been starved and abused from age 19 to 29.

I googled and found these feed tags posted on the internet. The ingredients tend to vary, depending on availability, but here is an idea of why we avoid these processed feeds.
