Moreau “Mike” Kates passed at Hope West in Grand Junction, Colorado on November 1, 2019.
“Mike was born November 9, 1931 in NYC. He attended Evander Childs High School in the Bronx. He married H. Patricia Ott in June 1950. He served in the U.S. Army 1952-1954 stationed at Ft. Benning, GA. Taught communication equipment. After being discharged, the family returned to NYC where Mike worked for Bigelow-Sanford Carpets and became production manager. He attended NYU at night and received a degree in business. He was a member of the NY Athletic Club. His daughter, Cathy, has fond recollections of the times they spent horseback riding, fishing, swimming, and water skiing at their summer home in CT, snow skiing and practicing archery and riflery. She recalls shooting him with a target arrow by accident and he did not even get angry. He was always fun to be with.
Mike volunteered with the San Diego Sheriff Department for 10 years. After moving to Grand Junction in 2005 he volunteered with Mesa County Sheriff’s Department for 8 years, also volunteered at CBI for one year. He received awards while employed at Lockheed Martin for teamwork. Received NOVA award in 1995.
Mike was a member of Knights of Columbus 2005-2007 in San Diego. Transferred to Immaculate Heart of Mary council in 2007 until present. He was treasurer in the council for 9 years. He received numerous awards, Knights of the year in 2004 and 2007. Received Service award in 2014.
Mike will be dearly missed by his daughter and all who his life touched.
The Vigil service by Knights of Columbus will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary on Thursday, November 14 at 7 pm. The memorial service will be held Friday, November 15th at 10:00 am. Interment at the Veteran’s Cemetery on November 18th at Riverside Parkway at 1 pm.”
He loved dogs and the ashes of his beloved dog, Clyde, were included in the columbarium with my Dad’s.

Word Press won’t let me edit photo sizes, but there are photos at the obituary site and on Facebook, should anyone want to see. I miss him and am trying to adjust to life without a father.

What a beautiful newsletter and tribute to your dad. He sounds like a wonderful man. That doesn’t surprise me at all as he raised you! I know how much you will miss him – I think of my dad every single day. Cherish those memories, and let him love on in your heart. Love to you, Susan
Thank you, Susan. I am the last one in our family, so that is making it harder. My parents & I were all only children. It seems like yesterday that he was on his hands & knees playing “horsey” so I could ride around our living room. Life goes by too fast. Love to you, too.
I lost my dad when he was 43, know the sadness it brings, also know he will be with you always in your thoughts and deeds.
Thank you, Marshia. I am sorry your Dad was so young when you lost him.
My thoughts are with you at this time, I still miss my Dad although it has been a long time since he died. Your Dad can now meet Knickers, Warrior, Rhonda and all the others you have taken care of and lost and swap stories with them. I am here if you want to talk. Love you as always. Just a note to-day is the 17th anniversary of when we found Spirit and all the others.
Thank you, Jackie. My Dad was able to travel to visit in 2010 & meet everyone here at that time. Thank you for saving Spirit. I know you miss him so much now. Love you
