Little old “Lady” is feeling great

Lady was dumped at our local shelter early in March when her elderly, disabled owner died. We got her 10 days later, as she had little chance of being adopted at age 13. She arrived with gingivitis, a fever and then tested low thyroid. We cleaned her teeth- bones, brushing and some scaling done at home, gave her a course of antibiotics and got her started on thyroxine. Here she is today, playing with a bone. The video is pretty cute and shows her spirit, despite what she has been through.

Some rain, hoof trimming, Lady settling in

We got some much-needed rain over the weekend. That always softens up the mustang’s hard hooves, so I take advantage and do some hoof trimming.

Lady is doing well, considering her advanced age and the turmoil she has gone through in the past few weeks. Her owner died, then family dumped her at our local shelter, where she was for 9 days before we took her in. We are slowly cleaning her teeth and treating her gingivitis, and she is on antibiotics as her infected mouth had affected her nasal passages and she sneezes a lot. She is also on supplements and low allergy food.
What frustrates and angers me, is finding out she regularly saw one of the local vets. They vaccinated her yearly (unneeded and unsafe for an older dog) yet they neglected to have her former owner address her infected mouth and tartar. Most vaccines are good for 7 years to life and no old dog should be getting vaccinated, except where required by law to have rabies vaccinations. We would do titers to avoid rabies, but Az. has no vaccine waivers.

Our weather is beautiful and the lilac bush is already growing leaves.

I saw a 13 year old terrier on our local shelter’s website the other night. The poor dog’s owner had died and the family took little “Lady” to our shelter, which has a high kill rate. They are a very caring shelter, but the irresponsible people in this county keep dumping dogs and cats there. I cannot believe that this is how people “honor” their deceased relatives, but it seems to be a common thing. Well, Lady had already been there 9 days. Our VP, Bonnie, went to the shelter today to get Lady and she is now resting comfortably and safely tonight. She was sneezing and has gingivitis. The bacteria from her mouth probably are affecting her nasal  passages and sinuses. We have started treating her gums and she is on a course of antibiotics. She is very sweet and is good with adults, children and cats. It is hard to believe no one found her a new home.

I  sent a Tobin Fraley carousel music box/horse to Sue Steiner to add to our eBay page. I had gotten it as a gift in the late 1980’s. Well, much to our surprise, it is a rare one! We are very grateful to Sue for doing her research.

Sue says,

Note the number on the bottom of the piece  8480  This indicates this piece had a firing of only 21 days and the mold was destroyed after that.  This is being auctioned off for a horse rescue whose founder is the original owner.  She is in need of funds for her rescue.  75% of the funds from this sale will go to her.
