Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays from JERAS!

It was a busy and exciting year at Journey’s End Ranch Animal Sanctuary.

Before I forget, we have a new mailing address: 3085 East Prairie Hill Rd. Kingman, Az. 86409…mail going to the old address may not be forwarded.

All in all, 2012 was a great year, despite my being kicked in the chest by Knickers in January and trampled badly by another horse in May. After some months, I am healed up. Life goes on!

January found us in the Pepsi Refresh contest- a crazy month of daily voting as we sought to win a $10,000 grant to be used to expand our facility by adding a hay shed, two horse shelters and fence another 3 acres. Thanks to our great friends & supporters, we did get the grant.

January was also a sad time, as we lost Tara, our Siberian husky, to cancer. Tara had lived on a chain at our neighbor’s for 10 years, neglected, never spayed, being fed cheap food and having little shelter. We were finally able to get her away from him in Jan. 2010 when she was close to death. It took almost a year to rehabilitate her and she had two happy years as part of our family, with access to the house, a warm bed, good food, the medication she needed, and doggie friends. However, her earlier neglect resulted in a hormone-related, aggressive cancer that took her away from us just 2 weeks after diagnosis. She is sorely missed.

In January, we took in Knickers, a 30 year old Arabian stallion seized from a hoarder who had locked him in a 10 X 10 foot stall in a metal shed for 10 years.  Knickers has gained weight and blossomed into the beautiful stallion he was meant to be. He likes to show off & gallop in for his meals of soaked pellets, as he is missing many teeth. He has his own Facebook page, too.

We also took in two burros rescued from a feed lot in New Mexico. Both jennies arrived pregnant. Esperanza had a beautiful daughter in late June and Nina had a handsome son Nov. 28.

In April, we took in a 10 year old beagle about to be put to sleep at our local shelter. Rhonda required spaying, a dental & blood work. Her anxiety has been greatly reduced over the months, but she is pretty much a non-stop barker… lucky for us we have no close neighbors. She is playful and very affectionate.

In April, we also took in Rusty, a 19 year old Arabian gelding with an old back injury. He also had a severe fungal skin infection and infected hooves which required several months of treatment.

Over the summer, we added two horses and a burro.  Penny, a 23 year old Arab/Appaloosa cross mare arrived and she & Rusty are inseparable. They enjoy the 3 newly fenced acres and shelter we added with the Pepsi grant.

Sam, a burro gelding, also joined us, after his owner passed away. He and Pepito have become best buddies and enjoy lots of rowdy play.

Cheyenne, a 15 year old mustang mare also arrived. She had been through numerous homes since being captured at age 4 and was abused at some point, because she will not allow people to touch her. She is calmer now and happy as part of the mustang herd.

Warrior, a 23 year old pinto mustang gelding arrived in November. He had been removed from an abuser in Ca. by the authorities and faced being put down because he is very arthritic and has trust issues. Once he knows you, he is very sweet. He is gaining weight and is very happy here, sharing the paddock with Rusty and Penny.

We also saved 4 dogs by fostering them until they could go to new homes. We spend a lot of time networking animals in need and have helped save many dogs, cats, horses & burros this year. We also continue to advocate for our  nation’s wild horses & burros and to fight against horse slaughter and other animal abuse.

To cap off a wonderful year, we just won a $20,000 grant from Chase Community Giving. Our many wonderful supporters voted for us in this tough contest and this grant will actually keep us afloat, as we had already had to borrow quite a bit to get hay to get us through winter.

We also won a spot on the 2012 Top Rated List from GreatNonProfits. If you wish to read the great reviews we got from our loyal friends, go to

We still depend heavily upon our generous donors, and thank them for their support which enables us to care for 30 wonderful animals. Thank you!

We hope you have a peaceful & joyous holiday season- Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
