Pepito Excavadora
I saw an ad for a “free BLM burro” on the bulletin board and when I called the #, found out it was a local friend, just 2 miles up the road from us. She had gotten him 6 months ago from someone who did not like his tendency to dig. They thought he was bored and would stop digging when moved to their 5 acres with other horses and 2 mini donkeys. However, he kept digging holes. Mary’s husband has had multiple orthopedic surgeries and she feared he would fall in one of the holes, so they decided to give him away.
The current economy and skyrocketing hay prices have put many animals at risk of neglect and slaughter and it is hard to find good, long-term homes these days for any equines.
I met “Buckwheat” and found him to be very sweet. Having a male burro (he is gelded) would really create a family group for Jovita & Serena. He arrived Nov. 13, 2011 and is already having fun with his new friends. Since the girls have Spanish names, we have named him “Pepito”. The meaning of the name is “God Will Increase”. His last name, “Excavadora”, means “digger”.
Pepito appears to be 12-13 years old, going by his teeth and freeze brand, which is missing the second symbol for his year of birth. He was born in 1990 something, though. We will clip the hair more to send pictures to the BLM and see if they can decipher it for us.
